Digital video is convenient, not expensive and it allows to create content very quickly. Another good thing about it is that it is very clean. There’s no artefact of the image like we used to see in the old movies. We could say that it is a good thing, but once in a while, we kind of miss the good old unwanted accident. But shooting with real film is expensive, so that’s where we come in. Blending the imperfections of old film effects with digital footage can sometimes add a warmth to the image.

Softwares like Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects and Final Cut Pro X are a sure shot. Drop the film grain file in the timeline, place it over your footage and experiment with the blend modes. To achieve a better result, you will maybe need to tweak the film grain by adjusting the opacity, the brightness, the contrast, the levels, the curves, the saturation and the sharpening.
